How do the elderly spend their time? Have you ever thought about what Mom is doing every day? Perhaps you’re beginning to see the need to help out your parents more and be wondering what they might be doing that consumes many hours. Grandpa always has something he will be working on. Perhaps it’s reversed and you are concerned about them having too much free time on their hands.
There are differences in the amount of time that individuals spend alone in groups of ages
No matter if people 55 and over were not married. They spend an extensive amount of time in the day by themselves. If they were doing errands or watching TV about 10 hours of each day were spent on their own for adults who were not married, and 5.5 hours when they had one or more spouses.
People living in assisted living Newport beach barely spend any time in front of the TV because they always choose some time for group activity over watching TV. People who were not married spent more time with friends and relatives, approximately four hours a day, in comparison to 2.5 minutes for couples who were married.
What is the difference between that and younger generations?
It’s not a surprise that students (age 18 to 49) generally have fewer hours alone. In the BLS, American Time Use Survey for students, there was not a category for time spent by themselves. This could be due to educational demands. Incredibly, when you consider the large amounts of time at “educational activities“, students have less time to read than older adults.
Overall, students are spending significantly more time studying as well as driving and working than people of a certain age. This is why there was nearly no time individuals were on their own and is the reason for their lower levels of depression too.
To work or not work
Older Americans who are over 65 were also surveyed about their time at leisure. People who worked spent about three hours per day watching television, while their non-employed counterparts watched nearly five hours.
Time spent socializing and communicating with people via telephone or face to face, was about the same and under an hour for both groups. Both spend less than an hour in reading. the unemployed group did spend a little more time however, the biggest difference between unemployed and employed seniors is the time they spend watching television. Both groups spent roughly the equivalent amount of time on household chores.
