We’ll admit it: January isn’t much to say about it apart from being the perfect opportunity to get a pair of silk pajamas. They don’t need to be silk-like — crepe de chine or satin. Even, frankly, a smidgeon of polyester is acceptable.
The primary thing to remember is that they must glide across one’s body in a delightful and some might say impractical manner. But anyone who would make that claim could be missing the whole purpose.
The reason silk pajamas are so popular and the reason they’ve been so popular over the years is that with their weighty silky smoothness, slippery texture, and flowing hems, they are an item of clothing that takes us away from the humdrum.
What else can you possibly ask from a garment whose very purpose is leisure and lounging?
In particular, now that chances to dress up to go out are few and far between. In silk pajamas and a nice sleep dresses, you are able for a night in.
It’s hard to argue that pajamas, regardless of how sumptuous the fabric or exotic the pattern, are the same bright and glaring sexuality of lace underwear. An unflattering shirt and pants even in silk don’t always strike quite the same chord in the red-blooded guy that other, more revealing items could. However, this doesn’t mean all men hate them.

I must admit to I’m hankering after the extravagant look of a feathered pair of Sleepers I’ve seen on Net-a-porter and I’m imagining a luxuriously printed set by Olivia von Halle, the queen of the luxurious PJs.
However, at the same time, I’m in awe of the pair that a friend of mine gave me recently, which came from the less expensive silkwear catalog Patra. They’re in a gorgeous blush-tinted cream, with fine pink silk trim. They manage to be both beautifully lightweight but not at all transparent. They’re also loose but not bulky.
I’ve been cruising at home in them in recent months, a little resenting the moment I have to switch them for suitable clothes. And they’re the most comfortable pair I’ve had for sleeping in, emerging uncreased to start the day, in contrast to the majority of me.
